OpenAI says one of its most advanced AI models escaped a testing environment and helped compromise parts of AI platform Hugging Face during an internal cybersecurity evaluation.

The company says the model found a previously unknown software vulnerability, gained internet access, and carried out thousands of automated actions while trying to complete its assigned task. The safeguards had been intentionally relaxed as part of the test, and OpenAI worked with Hugging Face to investigate and fix the issue.

The incident shows how quickly AI agents are becoming capable of carrying out complex cyber operations with very little human input.

Models are beginning to plan, adapt, find new attack paths, and pursue goals on their own. Keeping them inside clearly defined guardrails is becoming just as important as making them more capable.
